Contents

Course objectives will be stated separately for the Basic and the Advanced module. Contents will be summarized first in terms of communicative goals, and second in terms of control of Swahili language structures. For a detailed outline of course contents, see Table of Contents.

The Basic level module focuses on the acquisition of basic knowledge, practice and skills in the Swahili language.

1. Elementary conversational skills

These comprise greetings, address formulas, everyday dialogues, question-answer and "third turn" competence, transactional know-how such as buying and selling, narrating simple events, describing pictures, metalinguistic expressions, etc., and last but not least, awareness training in cultural constraints on language use .

2. Control of lexico-grammatical structure

Basic sentence structure: This includes nominal classification and class agreement between different parts of the sentence.

Nominal phrase structure: This includes the identification, description, selection, qualification and quantification of referents.

Verb structure: This includes differences of tense, aspect and mood, negation, and verb derivation.

Contents of the Advanced level module

The Advanced level module (in preparation) aims at enhancing students' social and textual competence in using the language in a broad variety of situations and fields of interest. Its teaching focus is, among other things, the ability
